Gary Ramage War In Ukraine

  • ANVAM 312 Saint Kilda Road Melbourne, VIC, 3004 Australia (map)

The Consequence of War - A photography exhibition by Gary Ramage.

Open Tuesday and Thursday 12.00pm - 4.30pm during May.

Exhibition Statement:

In 2022 I travelled to Ukraine. The purpose of travelling to an active war zone was to document the tragedy of war through photography. I wanted to make pictures that would show the struggle of the people of Ukraine. Having decided not to compete with the major media outlets I removed the stress of filing to deadlines, and gave myself complete control of the assignment.

Having to self-fund the project was a financial strain but one I felt needed to be done. More than 100 years after Sir George Hubert Wilkins MC and Frank Hurley captured their photographs of WW1, I continue to fulfil an ongoing commitment to telling stor through my photography. There is no glamour or glory in war - just death, destruction, and sadness.

Over a 30-year career, I have seen the worst side of humanity and I feel very lucky that my passion and childhood hobby continue to drive me and enable me to make photographs that tell a story every day.
