Gary Ramage War In Ukraine
The Consequence of War - A photography exhibition by Gary Ramage.
Open Tuesday and Thursday 12.00pm - 4.30pm during May.
Exhibition Statement:
In 2022 I travelled to Ukraine. The purpose of travelling to an active war zone was to document the tragedy of war through photography. I wanted to make pictures that would show the struggle of the people of Ukraine. Having decided not to compete with the major media outlets I removed the stress of filing to deadlines, and gave myself complete control of the assignment.
Having to self-fund the project was a financial strain but one I felt needed to be done. More than 100 years after Sir George Hubert Wilkins MC and Frank Hurley captured their photographs of WW1, I continue to fulfil an ongoing commitment to telling stor through my photography. There is no glamour or glory in war - just death, destruction, and sadness.
Over a 30-year career, I have seen the worst side of humanity and I feel very lucky that my passion and childhood hobby continue to drive me and enable me to make photographs that tell a story every day.
About Gary Ramage
PhotographerGary Ramage is one of Australia’s leading photojournalists who has more than 31 years experience in the media industry.
Gary has documented conflicts all over the world, including Somalia, Bougainville, Bosnia, Kosovo, East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan, Philippines and Ukraine.

In 2013/2014 he was appointed as the Australian War Memorial’s Official War Photographer.
Gary has won three Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism. In 2012 Gary won the Walkley Award for broadcast camera work. In 2015 he was awarded Press Photographer of the Year and Photograph of The Year.

March to Art: Place
March to Art is ANVAM’s annual exhibition of art by veterans and family members.
Place – a particular portion of space, whether of definite or indefinite extent.
To create this exhibition, living veteran photographers and their families ventured into the world equipped with today’s digital technology to photograph the places that inspire and matter to them: somewhere lived, encountered, remembered or imagined.
From everyday photographs to software-finished images, the exhibition presents places as varied as the photographers’ practices, rendered in often highly personal and artful ways. The curatorial ambition for the show is simply to give audiences different apertures through which to see and discover shared meaning in all manner of places.

March to Art: Narratives
Narratives – Stories of events or experiences, real or imagined.
From prehistoric mark-making to contemporary creative practices, art and storytelling have a long association in human experience.
ANVAM’s Narratives exhibition is founded on the belief that veteran artists belong to a creative tradition of storytelling emanating from their encounter with some aspect of historical or contemporary military service. Whether a story is personal and never told before – or part of a long-standing narrative from national military heritage – veteran artists today are uniquely placed to inherit creative veteran traditions and express their own stories to all generations.
March to Art: Narratives features contemporary art work by fourteen artists, including commissioned works responding to the creative life and enduring art practice of veteran artist Guy Warren, a celebrated painter and national treasure now working in his sixth decade.
Curated by Bruce Copland.

Territory Tribute (IVAE 18)
The inaugural International Veterans Art Exhibition (IVAE18) showcases art by 18 veterans from seven nations. IVAE18 was originally displayed by the Australian National Veterans Arts Museum (ANVAM) alongside the Invictus Games Sydney 2018 from 20th to 27th October 2018 to both highlight and advance the universal engagement of veterans in the arts.
Veterans from all participating Invictus Games nations were invited to submit artworks, along with an overview of their service, to the inaugural international
exhibition. Following a curatorial selection process works by veterans from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Poland, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States were chosen for IVAE18.
The curatorial process sought to showcase the diversity and richness of veterans arts. The exhibition showcases veteran stories through a range of mediums and service experience. The cultural diversity of veterans art is on display in IVAE18 with veterans bringing to their work their lived experiences of service including national pride, military service, post military experiences, creative processes and much more.
In developing IVAE18, ANVAM sought to be a leader in creating a global movement to unite and support veterans and families through arts engagement; to recognise and empower veterans through their stories; and create an enduring legacy highlighting the benefits of arts engagement.
Veterans have always explored their stories through the arts; capturing their own stories and lived experiences and to collaborate with others. The focus of Territory Tribute’s program of events commemorates Australia’s wartime history and honours those who have served. IVAE18 is a great companion to the International Military Writers’ Festival, a marquee event of Territory Tribute.
ANVAM is thrilled to be part of the Territory Tribute’s events program highlighting the Territory’s ongoing importance to the Australian Defence Force (ADF). AN- VAM’s exciting partnership with Territory Tribute further emphasises the growing interest in veterans arts.

From War is a unique and collaborative exhibition that brings together selected works from the permanent art collections of the Australian National Veterans Arts Museum (ANVAM) and Parliament House, Canberra.
From War conveys compelling stories from the lives of more than twenty veteran artists. The exhibition considers the way military service and war have impacted the lives of the exhibiting artists and their families, demonstrating the way art can positively transform lives.
For many veteran artists making art is both an expression of personal creativity and a way of ‘making meaning’. Veteran artistic practices can draw upon – and extend beyond – the individual’s experience of military service. For some, art is a lifeline and a life force; a way to tell stories and ask important questions about themselves and their place today in Australian society.
Using a diverse range of disciplines including photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, textiles, and poetry, the artists featured in the exhibition reflect on their personal questions and process sharing unique stories of their lived experiences of military service that continue to unfold today.
